John Mellencamp on war, Afghanistan
In the Bullpen has video of singer John Mellencamp being interviewed by Charlie Rose about Mellencamp's views on war. In the midst of the interview, Mellencamp revealed that he disagreed with the decision to go to war in Afghanistan after 9/11. Mellencamp thought that we should have talked to "the Muslims" and figure out what went wrong between America and the Muslim world.
I could not disagree more. To respond to acts of war with "diplomacy" will only serve to strengthen your enemy. Osama bin Laden already viewed the United States as weak, a diplomatic response to 9/11 could only help Al Qaeda.
The incoherence didn't end there. Near the end of the interview, Mellencamp expressed doubt at the veracity of the historical account of Pearl Harbor. Maybe it's best if Mellencamp just stuck to music.
