The IAEA cannot be trusted

The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) is the United Nations agency responsible for preventing nuclear proliferation and inspecting nuclear facilities around the world. They are the agency who is conducting inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities in an attempt to prevent the Iranians from having a nuclear weapons program.

The problem is, the head of the IAEA, Mohamed El-Baradei, seems more worried about a potential war between Iran and the US or Israel. Story from BBC.

Dr ElBaradei said a nuclear-armed Iran would be terrible but the jury was still out as to whether the country even wanted nuclear weapons.

But he said you could not "bomb knowledge", and he was scathing towards those who still favoured air strikes after the experience of intervention in Iraq.

"I wake every morning and see 100 Iraqis innocent civilians are dying," he said. "I have no brief other than to make sure we don't go into another war or that we go crazy into killing each other.
You do not want to give additional argument to new crazies who say 'let's go and bomb Iran.'"

Asked who the "new crazies" were he replied: "Those who have extreme views and say the only solution is to impose your will by force."

His job is to inspect Iranian nuclear facilities to make sure Iran is not conducting a nuclear weapons program. His job is not to analyze the geopolitical ramifications of his findings. It's about time for Mr. El-Baradei to focus on his job.

His statement that "the jury's still out" on whether Iran wants nuclear weapons is certainly troubling. Based on Iran's history, the public statements of Ahmadinejad, holding foreigners hostage, and the Iranian support of multiple destabilizing forces in the region these statements of the IAEA head are naïve.

These statements are in no way a fluke. Last year, a nuclear inspector for the IAEA claimed that El-Baradei fired him because the Iranians demanded it. Last May, El-Baradei said that Iran was surrounded by nuclear powers and therefore felt insecure.

The UN is supposed to be an organization to promote a peaceful world. But yet again, the UN shows itself to be utterly useless, and in some cases worse than useless. It appears the IAEA head, Mohamed El-Baradei appears more worried about how Iran feels than the horrifying possibility of an Iranian nuclear weapon. And yet again, the UN gives respect to a rogue regimes that deserves none.
